I'm going overseas. How can I access my money?
The most convenient way to access your accounts overseas is to use a Visa card or prepaid travel money card with a PIN at an ATM facility.
Using a Visa card means you can also visit a local bank and withdraw money over the counter. There will be a fee for this service, and interest will be incurred for Visa credit cards. Refer to our Disclosure documents for more details.
All our Visa debit and Visa credit cards come embedded with a smart chip, making cards virtually impossible to copy and offering a new level of security against counterfeiting, card skimming and other fraudulent use. If you are travelling overseas and your current card does not have an embedded chip we recommend you contact us to update your card prior to travelling.
A Travelex Cash Passport or prepaid money card gives you ATM only or ATM and debit card options. There is no name on the card, offering a supreme level of secuirty.
If you are travelling overseas, make sure you're signed up for Internet Banking so you can keep track of your accounts while you're away.
Alternatively, rediCARD PLUS cards can be used in overseas ATMs that display a PLUS symbol. If your current rediCARD does not currently have the PLUS functionality contact us to update your card prior to travelling.
What information does the smart chip contain?
A chip card is a Visa credit or debit card with an embedded smart chip. It appears as a gold square on the left hand side of the card. Like the magnetic stripe on the back of current credit and debit cards, the embedded microchip securely stores account details - account name, number and account expiry date. But unlike the magnetic strip, the microchip is virtually impossible to copy, which provides an unrivalled level of protection against counterfeiting, card skimming and other fraudulent use.
How do I use my smart chip Visa card?
On chip enabled POS terminals, instead of swiping your card, you will soon be asked to insert your card into the chip terminal. Your card remains in the terminal throughout the transaction and you will be requested to confirm your identity by entering your PIN.
Once your PIN is confirmed and the transaction has been processed, you will be prompted to remove your card from the terminal.
Can I continue to use the magnetic strip on my card?
For the time being, your new Visa chip card can still be used in traditional swipe EFTPOS terminals with PIN or signature approval. You can also use your Visa card at ATMs. As merchant terminals are upgraded, however, 'dipping the chip' and entering a PIN will become the new, easier, faster and safer way to transact. If you are travelling overseas, we suggest you memorise your PIN as this is now the preferred payment authorisation method for most merchants.
Are smart chip Visa cards secure?
Yes, the smart chip provides a new level of protection against counterfeiting, card skimming and other fraudulent use as the microchip is virtually impossible to copy.
When will I receive a Visa chip card?
Members will receive a chip card on renewal of their existing Visa credit or debit card, or if they are replacing an existing Visa credit or debit card for any reason. New Visa debit or credit card holders will receive a chip card on order of their first card. Members who are planning on travelling overseas are encouraged to replace their existing card prior to renewal.
How do Visa Debit cards work?
Purchases and cash withdrawals are directly deducted from your transaction account, so there are no interest charges unless you're using an overdraft option. This means you can monitor your account balance and see exactly how much money you have left to spend. Visa Debit also has the convenience of International access to your accounts and the ability to make purchases made online – still accessing your own funds. All purchases, including payWave transactions, are covered by Visa cardholder protections, policies and chargeback rights.
The following clip provides a great description of Visa Debit functionality and its uses.
All our Visa Debit cards have the latest smart chip technology which is virtually impossible to copy, which provides an unrivalled level of protection against counterfeiting, card skimming and other fraudulent use. Our cards are also covered by Verified by Visa (VBV) which adds another level of protection when buying online. People’s Choice also provide a fraud protection service to members free of charge which monitors transactions to detect unusual activity, suspicious transactions and block the card if necessary.
In addition, all Visa card holders have admittance to Visa Entertainment providing access to concert and theatre ticket presales, film promotions and exclusive offers.
What is an outstanding authorisation?
An outstanding authorisation is when the estimated value of a purchase (eg. Hotel stay) has been held up for a period of up to an estimated six days to allow the merchant to process the transaction.
It can also be used as a security measure for transactions such as Hotel stay or Car rental. In this case, after six days the amount drops off the system. Whilst the authorisation is in place your available credit balance is reduced by that amount, but not the balance owing on the card.

To ensure that you do not exceed your limit, you may find it helpful to keep a pocket notebook with you to write down your purchases. Assess limit increases carefully, if you are offered a credit limit increase, make sure you can afford to pay off your new limit. You must consent to receiving an increase in limit offers in the first instance.

What is Visa payWave?
Visa payWave is a new, globally accepted, contactless payment solution. It allows Visa cardholders to complete transactions under $100 without having to swipe or insert the card. You simply wave the Visa card in front of the contactless terminal and go. No need to enter a PIN or sign for the transaction. It’s that simple.
The following clip provides a great description of the payWave functionality and its uses.
What are the benefits of using Visa payWave?
• It's like having exact change wherever you go, so you don't have to worry about carrying a lot of cash or looking for change • Contactless payments are an innovative new payment technology that makes small payments as easy as tapping your card • Your Visa payWave card never leaves your hand at the checkout and eliminates the risk of card skimming as there is no need to enter the card into a card reading device. • You can keep track of all transactions made using your Visa payWave card by checking your statement or Internet Banking transaction record, instead of keeping piles of receipts for your small purchases made with cash • It’s a fast and convenient payment method, especially at places where speed is essential, like at supermarkets, fast food restaurants, convenience stores and more • You still have the option of using your Visa card the traditional way by swiping or inserting your card into a card reader and entering a PIN or signing for the transaction
Are Visa payWave transactions safe?
Yes, they are: • You are in control - your contactless card never leaves your hands to make a payment • No accidental payments - your contactless card must be extremely close to the reader at the checkout to work • Customers won't be double-charged for the same transaction even if the card touches the reader more than once. • The maximum reach of 4cm means that you can't unknowingly pay for another person's purchase • Virtually impossible for any of your Visa card details to be intercepted while in use. Each payWave card reader contains security based on industry-wide standard.
How do I know only one Visa payWave transaction has been processed when I wave my Visa payWave card?
All Visa payWave readers are tested and certified to make sure a card is only read once per transaction. As a safeguard, each transaction must be complete or void before another one can take place.
What do you need to be able to use Visa payWave?
All you need is a Visa card with the payWave feature. People's Choice Credit Union offers members a credit or debit Visa card with the payWave feature. To find out if your card has contactless technology, it will have the payWave logo on the front. If you do not currently have a card with contactless technology, when your current card expires or is re-issued if reported as lost or stolen, the replacement card you receive will have contactless technology.
Why isn’t a signature or PIN required?
Visa has allowed Visa payWave retailers and merchants to ability to waive the need for collecting a signature or PIN for purchases under $100 to ensure that using Visa payWave is as simple and convenient as using cash and to keep transaction processing quick and efficient. Purchases over $100 will still require a PIN or signature to complete a transaction.
Is this technology as secure as my current card?
Yes. The Visa security systems will continue to offer you protection from unauthorised transactions based on secure chip technology, which provides both data protection and transaction security using the latest encryption technology. In addition, with contactless technology, you retain control of your card during the transaction, which reduces the risk of fraud.
Can I still use my People's Choice Credit Union Visa card at merchants that do not have contactless terminals?
Yes. The card can still be used the traditional way at non contactless terminals as it still has a chip and magnetic stripe, by either swiping or inserting the card and entering a PIN or signing you can complete the transaction. You can still choose to use your PIN or sign for transactions less than $100 if you prefer not to use the payWave functionality.
Can I use my Visa payWave card at ATMs?
Yes, the Visa payWave feature on your card will not affect how you normally use your card in an ATM currently. You will still be required to enter your PIN number in to process a transaction.
What types of retailer will accept Visa payWave?
We expect Visa payWave to be popular in busy locations where payment values tend to be small (under $100), and speed of service is a priority, for example supermarkets, fast food outlets, entertainment venues, and petrol stations. More and more retailers are bringing in the new contactless technology everyday.
How will I know that a retailer accepts Visa payWave transactions?
You will know that a retailer or merchant accepts Visa payWave transactions if they display the contactless payments indicator. Your Visa payWave card can still be used like a regular credit card at millions of locations worldwide where Visa is accepted. For information regarding Visa payWave merchants in Australia, visit visapaywave.com.au
Are there any fees for using Visa payWave?

What is the rediCARD PLUS fee?
The rediCARD PLUS fee is a $5 fee per card held and is charged annually in March. This fee is charged to cover the costs associated with providing a rediCARD PLUS card to our members.
Why will I be charged this fee?
This fee is charged to cover the costs associated with providing rediCARD PLUS cards to our members. rediCARD PLUS does not provide the same level of functionality or security as our Visa Debit card. Visa Debit is a convenient option for all your transactions, paying bills and day to day shopping as it can help you avoid paying transaction fees if you use the CR (Credit) option. It also gives you more flexibility than a rediCARD as you can use it like a credit card to pay for purchases on the internet, over the phone and overseas. However, unlike a credit card it deducts your purchases directly from your transaction or savings account. The smart chip in the Visa Debit card and payWave functionality also provides a greater level of security as rediCARD PLUS, although having overseas ATM access, does not have a smart chip.
I have never activated my card, will I be charged a fee?
All cards that show as having been issued to you in our system carry ongoing costs. Therefore the $5 fee will apply. Additional accounts can be accessed via rediATMs on Visa Debit and rediCARD PLUS cards so there may be an option for you to reduce the number of cards you hold to avoid being charged any unnecessary fees.
