Territorian and former People’s Choice Chair John Cossons has been admitted to an industry Honour Roll in recognition of nearly 40 years of championing the mutual sector.
The Business Council of Co-operatives and Mutuals (BCCM), the industry association representing the mutual sector, last night recognised Mr Cossons for his leadership and commitment in a sector shaped by people working together to improve shared outcomes.
People’s Choice Chief Executive Officer Steve Laidlaw said the length of Mr Cossons’ career was a testament to his belief in its values.
“While the financial services sector has undergone significant change, John has navigated its evolution by continuing to focus on one thing: the importance of acting in the best interests of members,” he said.
“John has advocated for the principles of mutuality with people and organisations across the country, seeing it as vital to the ongoing success of the sector. He has been guided by these principles in all of his dealings as a director and as a representative of the mutual banking and financial services sector.”
Mr Cossons joined the Board of the NT Credit Union in 1981 after a Big Four bank refused him a loan based on his single status rather than assessing him as an individual. He was appointed Chair of Australian Central Credit Union in 2001 and became Chair of People’s Choice Credit Union in 2014.
