New payment field in Mobile Banking App and Internet Banking

From 22 September 2020, you’ll notice a new field called Reference when you make a Fast Payment in our Mobile Banking App or Internet Banking. This is an optional field that you can use to add an invoice number or anything that might help you identify the reason for the payment. You’ll be able to see the Reference in your transaction history.
Note that the recipient will also see what you’ve entered in the Reference field.

What happens if I don’t put anything in the Reference field?

The field will show as ‘NOTPROVIDED’ to the recipient and will be blank in your transaction receipt.

What’s the difference between the Reference field and the Description field?

Think of the Reference as something the recipient will see (like an invoice number) and the Description as something that makes sense to you, such as ‘Concert ticket’. A Description can include up to 280 characters, including emojis and special characters, whereas a Reference can include up to 35 characters of numbers and letters only. If you use emojis or special characters in the Reference field you’ll receive a ‘Payment Failed’ alert when you try to make the payment, which will say there is ‘Invalid Data’.
